When a Colombia EPC contractor needed to finish about 2,800 foundation piles before the rainy season, it brought in a Crawler Solar Pile Driver from YG Machinery for a 5 MW mountain PV project near Bogotá. The site was not flat. The slopes were steep, the ground turned to hard shale just below the surface, and the original small rig was too slow to hold the schedule. This is the record of how one machine was configured, tested, and used on that project.
Project Background: Why This Colombia Site Needed a Crawler Solar Pile Driver
The project had a clear set of site facts. It was a 5 MW photovoltaic project in the mountains around Bogotá, at an altitude of about 2,600 m. The working slopes were mostly 25° to 30°. Below about 30 cm of topsoil, the crew hit hard shale. The pile plan called for about 2,800 foundation piles. The original schedule allowed 45 days for piling.
The contractor first tried a rented small drill and a standard piling unit. Daily output was less than 20 holes. The machines slipped on the slope, and pile verticality was hard to control. The rainy season was coming. The contractor needed a machine that could stay stable on the slope, break the shale, and keep piles straight. The machine from YG Machinery was selected for a trial.
Site Challenges for a Solar Piling Machine: Slope, Shale, and Rainy Season
Slope stability. On a 25° to 30° working face, a standard unit tended to slide or tilt. When the machine tilted, the pile angle changed. Later bracket installation would need extra correction.
Hard shale layer. The shale was hard and shallow. The small drill could not keep pace. Bit wear and auxiliary time took up too much of the shift. The crew needed more impact energy and a stronger feed system.
Rainy season deadline. The original 45-day piling window was already tight. Adding labor could not solve the problem, because the bottleneck was machine output, not manpower. The contractor needed a machine that could work through the shale and keep daily output predictable.

How the Solar Pile Driving Machine Was Configured for the Site
YG Machinery recommended its crawler photovoltaic pile driver for this project. The unit was configured around the site’s slope, shale, and pile size. The recommended model is a Photovoltaic Pile Driver built for rough ground and hard layers.
| Crawler photovoltaic pile driver | |||
| Overall dimensions | 4700*2200*2800mm | Hydraulic hammer flow | 50-110L/min |
| Track shoe width | 400mm | Impact frequency | 350-800BMP |
| motor | 4108 | Hydraulic system pressure | 25mpa |
| Generator power | 88kw Motor | Strong wind for heat dissipation | yes |
| Drilling depth | 0-6m | oil pump | 40/40/32 |
| Drilling diameter | 80-600mm | Driving speed | 3km/h |
Compared with a standard Hydraulic Pile Driver, this configuration put more focus on stable travel and consistent hammer energy. The 400 mm track shoes and 3 km/h travel speed gave the operator controlled movement on the slope. The 25 MPa hydraulic system and 350–800 BMP impact frequency provided the energy needed for the shale layer. The 0–6 m depth and 80–600 mm diameter range covered the project’s pile design.
Solar Piling Machine Setup: Stability and Drilling Control
Before each row, the crew checked the machine level and marked the pile points. The operator kept travel speed low and moved the unit in short steps. The 400 mm track shoes helped the machine hold its line on the slope. The hydraulic hammer was set to a steady impact frequency, so each pile received consistent energy.
For the shale sections, the crew used the hydraulic hammer to break the hard layer. For softer spots, the drilling mode was used to keep the hole clean. The machine was not moved more than needed. The operator completed one row before moving to the next. This reduced repeated positioning on the slope and helped keep pile verticality within 1.5%.

On-Site Results: Solar Pile Driving Machine Data from the Project
The trial started with a test pile section. The client’s project manager, Carlos Rodríguez, watched the first piles go in. He had questioned whether the machine could hold stable on the shale slope. After the test, the crew checked pile verticality and machine position. The results were within the project tolerance.
Daily output rose to 90–110 piles. Pile verticality stayed within 1.5%. The piling work was completed in 31 days instead of the planned 45. The machine finished the 2,800 piles before the rainy season closed the site access. Rodríguez said the hydraulic hammer broke through the hard layer faster than expected, and the tracked chassis stayed stable on the uneven ground. He also noted that YG Machinery’s technical support helped the crew keep the schedule.
Client Decision and Repeat Order After the Crawler Solar Pile Driver Trial
The client had compared several options. The lowest quote did not include a hydraulic hammer set for hard shale. The highest quote was over budget. The machine sat in the middle, but the decision was not based on price alone. The client wanted proof of slope stability and pile verticality. The test pile data and the site video gave that proof. The service plan also listed spare parts and response time, which mattered on a remote mountain site.
After the project, the contractor ordered a second unit for another project. The client did not describe the purchase as a standard Solar Pile Driver buy. The repeat order was based on what the machine did on this specific slope, in this specific shale, before this specific rainy season. The contractor also called the Solar Pile Driving Equipment a good fit for mountain PV work where access and ground conditions change from row to row.

Need a Crawler Solar Pile Driver for Your PV Site?
This Colombia project showed what matters on a mountain PV site: stable travel on the slope, enough hammer energy for hard shale, and pile verticality that holds. The same machine finished 2,800 piles in 31 days, and the client ordered a second unit for its next project.
If your project faces similar conditions, YG Machinery can help you check the fit before you buy. Send us your site slope, soil or rock type, pile depth and diameter, and planned pile count. We will recommend a Crawler Solar Pile Driver configuration and prepare a quotation for your project.
