Small Spider Crane: Structure, Principle & Advantages

Spider Crane with Crawler Base

A small spider crane is not a scaled-down truck crane. It is a different answer to a different problem. Most lifting delays do not come from lack of capacity. They come from access. The crane cannot get in, cannot set up, or cannot stand safely. At YG Machinery, we build equipment for these constrained jobs.

What Is a Small Spider Crane?

It is a compact lifting machine with a crawler chassis, four independent hydraulic outriggers, and a multi-section telescopic boom. It is also called a mini spider crane or mini crawler crane. The name “spider” comes from the way the outriggers spread out for stability. The crawler tracks explain the rest.

Do not confuse it with a truck-mounted crane or a small truck crane. The key difference is the separated design of travel system and support system. It is not simply a “shrunk” crane.

Structure: How a Small Spider Crane Gets In and Stays Stable

The structure is not a simplified copy of a general crane. It is redesigned around one constraint: working in tight spaces.

Crawler chassis — the base for access. Rubber tracks spread load over a larger area. Ground pressure stays low. The machine can work on epoxy floors, stone floors, and lawns without necessarily needing steel road plates. A truck crane often needs a firm, prepared surface.

Four independent hydraulic outriggers — the real source of stability. Each leg can extend and adjust angle separately. The machine can stay level on steps, slopes, and single-side overhang. Truck crane outriggers are rigidly connected to the chassis and need over 5 m of lateral space. Folding outriggers on this machine can provide a wider support base without increasing travel width. Setup needs only about 3–4 m square.

This is the core design insight of a mini spider crane: travel width and working stability are two separate states. A traditional crane is forced to compromise between them.

Multi-section telescopic boom and slewing platform — reach within a small footprint. A box-section boom extends by hydraulic cylinders. It changes working radius and lift height. The slewing platform supports 0–360° continuous rotation. The chassis stays still while the boom covers the surrounding work area.

Winch, hydraulic system, and electrical control — force and control. The winch drum, wire rope, brake, and reducer form the lifting end. The brake prevents load slip. The hydraulic system is the main power path: pump, high-pressure oil, motor, and cylinder. The electrical system monitors boom length, angle, load, and outrigger pressure. It then limits hydraulic action when needed.

How It Works: From Remote Command to Precise Hydraulic Motion

The action chain is simple: engine → hydraulic pump → high-pressure oil → cylinder or motor → mechanical movement.

Boom extension: a hydraulic valve sends oil into the telescopic cylinder. The piston moves the boom section out or in. Working radius changes.

Slewing: a hydraulic motor drives the slewing reducer. The platform turns around the slewing bearing. Horizontal position changes.

Winch lifting: a hydraulic motor turns the winch drum forward or reverse. The wire rope raises or lowers the load.

Remote control is more than convenience. On a compact spider crane, the operator can stand where the view is better and the position is safer. Some models also allow remote outrigger operation. This is a safety design for tight spaces: people and machine can be separated, and view and control can be decoupled.

On top of hydraulic action, safety logic adds another layer. Overload protection, outrigger pressure monitoring, and anti-interference remote control help prevent dangerous moves before they happen.

Advantages: Where It Wins

The advantage is not “more power.” It is access to places other cranes cannot reach. Compare it with a truck crane by dimension.

  • Space access. Its narrow body lets it pass standard doors, narrow lanes, and corridors. It can enter floors and roofs by goods lift. A truck crane cannot work inside a floor. This machine can.
  • Ground friendliness. Low ground pressure from rubber tracks protects sensitive surfaces. It can work on floors and finished ground without always needing road plates.
  • Outrigger adaptability. Four legs adjust independently. It handles steps, slopes, and uneven ground. A truck crane has a fixed outrigger spread and needs a flatter site.
  • Setup speed and indoor work. It can be split for transport and moved by a small truck. Setup is quick. Electric operation is available for indoor zero-emission and low-noise work. As a spider crane manufacturer, YG Machinery designs these mobile spider cranes around real site access, not around showroom numbers.
  • Honest limits. Capacity is usually under 10 t. It is not for heavy structural lifts. Boom length is limited. At high height and long radius, capacity drops clearly. It cannot compete with a truck crane on height. Travel speed is slow. Long-distance moves depend on a flatbed. It is not for jobs that need frequent road transfers.

Spider Crawler Crane vs. Truck Crane vs. Tower Crane

A Spider Crawler Crane is not here to replace tower cranes or truck cranes. It fills the gap where they cannot enter or set up. The table below shows the division of labor.

Spider Crane for Sale: Match the Machine to the Job

When you search for a spider crane for sale, start with the job, not the price list. Check the narrowest door. Check the floor loading. Check the lift height and radius. Check whether the site needs electric operation. Then match the model.A machine that is too wide cannot enter. A machine with too little capacity cannot lift.

A machine with too much capacity may be hard to move and overpriced for the work. The right unit is the one that passes the access point, stands safely, and covers the lift envelope with a safe margin.

Real Applications: Where the Machine Earns Its Keep

Glass curtain wall and exterior work. The machine sits on the roof or inside the floor. With vacuum lifters, it places glass panels precisely. It replaces part of the scaffolding and tower crane work. Structure features at work: floor access, low ground pressure, and fine remote control.

Indoor equipment and shaft work. Elevator machine room equipment, air handling units, and transformers arrive by goods lift. The crane lifts them into place. Structure features: door and lift access, plus electric operation.

Narrow and underground spaces. Basement pump replacement and utility tunnel maintenance. The outriggers stabilize the body in limited space. The boom lifts and moves the load.

Complex terrain and scattered outdoor lifts. Gravel, mud, and slopes. Rubber tracks provide traction. Independent outriggers provide leveling.

A Simple Selection Rule

The value is not “lifting more.” It is moving lifting capacity where traditional equipment cannot reach. Crawler tracks, independent outriggers, and a compact folding body answer space constraints.

Use this rule. If the job cannot enter, cannot spread out, ground is not allowed, or indoor use is not possible, put this machine on the candidate list. For open ground, heavy tonnage, and high height, do not consider it.
